Who Wouldn’t Choose Life?

This would be almost funny to me if it weren't true. I read in the news this week that this proposed "choose life" themed license plate was ruled unconstitutional in North Carolina because "the state doesn't currently offer an alternative for those who may disagree with supporting life". That's right, there must be a countering license... Where is Your Jesus?

I A few years back, we took a family trip to Germany with our then 4 year old son. We had lived there a few years earlier (before children) and were excited to go show him all our favorite places and introduce him to a new culture. I love Europe. My favorite thing to do... Continue Reading →

The Messages of January

Happy New Year! As much as I love the fun of the holidays, I always feel kind of refreshed when January rolls around. A new (mostly blank) calendar and a house free of Christmas nutcrackers does me good. A symbolic "do over" time for everyone, January holds a lot of possibility. We hit the ground... The Real Cause of the Storm

Watching the opinions and fingers come out this week has been a bit much for me. I can't help but think most of it is well-intentioned people spinning their wheels. Questions ranging from "why would a good God allow this" to "what laws will prevent this" are bombarding us all. I have to humbly submit... Continue Reading →

Five Smooth Stones

Then Saul dressed David in his own tunic. He put a coat of armor on him and a bronze helmet on his head. David fastened on his sword over the tunic and tried walking around, because he was not used to them. “I cannot go in these,” he said to Saul, “because I am not used... Continue Reading →

A Tale of Two (cartoon) Shepherds…

I absolutely adore watching 'A Charlie Brown Christmas' on TV each year. We have the DVD of course, but there's just something about watching it in real time with commercials and all that really gets to me. I force, I mean 'gather' my boys to the TV with Christmas snacks and hot chocolate - they... Continue Reading →

Hand Me Another Brick!

Nehemiah wasn't exaggerating when he prayed to God saying, "Hear us oh God, for we are despised" (Nehemiah 4:4). Called by God to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem and rally the exiles who were already "in great distress" the task itself was difficult. Upon hearing his calling, Nehemiah sat down and wept for many days (1:4).  He... Continue Reading →

Beautiful story reminding us that God IS active and present in the darkest of times…

Four years ago today, I posted a blog about my emergency room “miracle experience” after the Aurora Theater shooting. The post went viral, and created some controversy. Does God really do miracles? Why for one person and not another? Does a good God even exist?

I don’t claim to have all the answers. But I saw the miracle with my own eyes. Thank you to those who have asked me to repost this story for a reminder: God is still at work.

At Columbine High School, I have seen this before. But not up close.  As a church pastor in Denver, I have worked as a chaplain alongside several police and fire departments. I was privileged to counsel parents just hours after the Columbine shootings. However, in this new tragedy at the Aurora Theater Dark Night shooting, one of the victims was a 22-year-old…

Worth Waiting For

“The house lights go off and the footlights come on. Even the chattiest stop chattering as they wait in darkness for the curtain to rise. In the orchestra pit, the violin bows are poised. The conductor has raised his baton. In the silence of a midwinter dusk, there is far off in the deeps of... Continue Reading →

Not safe, but good.

"Ooh," said Susan, "I thought he was a man. Is he - quite safe? I shall feel rather nervous about meeting a lion. "That you will, dearie, and no mistake,” said Mrs. Beaver. “If there’s anyone who can appear before Aslan without their knees knocking, they’re either braver than most or just plain silly.”    ...
